Metered Rack PDUs for Uptime and Reliability
Nearly all IT professionals can recall a situation when one too many pieces of equipment were plugged into a rack PDU, and if a breaker tripped, turmoil followed. Both an immediate solution and a long term solution, metered rack PDUs have become an asset to any organization that values uptime and reliability.
These units provide the data necessary to properly load and balance rack power circuits. The LED display advises IT professionals regarding how much headroom exists between the current capacity and the maximum draw of the power strip. From there, professionals can make informed decisions about equipment installation, and future growth potential by understanding where capacity exists on current circuits (also known as "stranded power"), so additional circuits are not pulled unnecessarily.
Power metering is especially important to ensure that the load is properly balanced when data centers with redundant power feeds are used. For example: if each strip is loaded at 40%, one feed can fail, and the other can compensate for the load without exceeding the standard requirements.
Power consumption in a server rack can more than double when servers are performing processor-intensive operations, making it difficult to accurately estimate power requirements. A metered-rack PDU continuously measures power consumption so usage never exceeds the capacity of the circuit. These units are also designed to provide advanced warning to protect against unexpected power overloads. User-defined alarms minimize risk with real-time local and remote alerts of potential circuit overloads of your equipment. These units provide power utilization trends, allowing IP Managers to make informed decisions regarding the right sizing environments to lower total cost of ownership.
